Georges P. Vanier operates three school programs; English, Continuing French Immersion and Late French Immersion along with the Learning and Literacy program, which is integrated in the English program. We believe in a "Vanier First" philosophy, where we are members of our school community first before program.
We offer a strong academic program including complementary courses and daily Physical Education. A highly acclaimed music program provides students opportunities to participate in Band.
We have an active peer support program including one of the first Gay-Straight Alliances in a Calgary middle school. Students participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities during our lunch break and after school.
We encourage learning in communities, where teachers, parents, and students make up the Vanier community of learners. We believe in student ownership and choice in learning. We believe in service to others, inside and outside the school community, and we believe in the capability and competence of young people.

About Georges P. Vanier
Vanier served with the 22nd Battalion (Van Doos) during the First World War. In 1959 he became governor- general of Canada. Vanier took office on 15 September 1959. At his swearing in, he said “Give peace to this beloved land of ours (and) the grace of mutual understanding, respect and love.” He added: “If Canada is to attain the greatness worthy of it, each of us must say, ‘I ask only to serve.’”

History of Georges P. Vanier School
Construction of Georges P. Vanier School was completed in 1960; the school was named for Georges Phileas Vanier who served as Canada’s Governor General from 1959 until 1967. He served in World War I and II and became a Major General in the Canadian Armed Forces. As well as having a distinguished military career, Vanier served as Canadian Ambassador to France from 1945 to 1953.
- Our school colors are blue, white, and silver. Our team's name is “Lynx”.
- Our 50th Anniversary was celebrated on May 27, 2010
- Our 60th Anniversary was in May of 2020
- Our Bilingual Program started in September 1984

We are committed to acknowledging and supporting the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission 94 Calls to Action specific to education. Our school, along with all CBE schools, made a Truth and Reconciliation Commitment to Action, on June 21, we renewed our commitment.

School Development Plan
Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year.
