Principal's Update

Dear Vanier Families,

A huge thank you to Ms. Ramos, both for putting on our fine arts evening, but also to her excellent and heartfelt land acknowledgement.  Also, thank you to Mme. Gillespie for her work with the drama students and their presentations.

This morning we invited our new students from Rosemont, Buchanan, Mount View, and Hillhurst to Vanier for their sports day.  This went fantastically and it was great for our new students to meet current students and their new classmates for next year.  Recognition to Mr. Cheng, Ms. Delcourt and Ms. Ramos for organizing this.

Parents will notice that on Monday there will be fencing that is being put up around the school, starting in our parking lot.  Vanier has received a building envelope, that will see all the windows and siding replaced over the next few years.  Please take care when dropping students off and picking students up in the morning as space may be a bit more limited.

Parent council has been given our next School Casino dates.  They are Dec 13 and 14 of the next school year (still 2026 though).  These casinos are an integral part of the council's fundraising ability.  Our last casino raised over $80 000 to support student learning and programming at Vanier.  These casinos only work if we get family members to volunteer their time to support the cause.  If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity or in volunteering, please email me and I can forward onto Farouk, our outgoing parent council president.

Finally, please read the messages below for some volunteer and summer camp opportunities around Calgary.

Bon weekend,
Mr. Chad Edmonds, Principal École Georges P Vanier School

Vanier Fundraising Opportunity

We want to support our students and staff by raising money through CocoBrooks sales! We receive a portion of the money for every menu item - there are so many options to choose, not just pizza. This money will go to the GPV Parent Council and helps fund clubs, teacher and staff appreciation, supplies, and making learning FUN.

Camp Bonaventure volunteer opportunity

Between Friends is a Calgary-based non-profit organization that provides inclusive recreational and social programs for people with different abilities. Every summer, they host Camp Bonaventure, an outdoor summer day camp for youth ages 4–17 (June 29 - August 21, 2026) that brings together individuals of all abilities in a supportive and welcoming environment.

They are currently recruiting volunteers (ages 12+) to support us this summer at Camp Bonaventure.

This is a great opportunity for students to gain volunteer hours, develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, and build meaningful connections while supporting an inclusive camp community.

For families who are interested they can find more information, please visit:

Feel free to reach out to me and I can put you in touch with the team there as well.

June is National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour and celebrate the histories, languages, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. In alignment with the Education Plan, all people connected with the CBE are invited to deepen knowledge, understanding and relationships, to include Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing across schools and service units. To support planning and engagement, check out these events. Everyone is invited and welcome.

City of Calgary Aboriginal Awareness Week: From June 15-21, the City of Calgary offers many events to honour Aboriginal Awareness Week culminating on Sunday, June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day. Everyone is invited to join the activities.

The Gathering at Moh'kinsstis: A one-day community gathering grounded in culture, connection, and ceremony to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on Sunday, June 21 from 11 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. at  ContainR Art Park & The Alexandra Centre (922 & 925 9 Avenue SE in Inglewood).

Heritage Park Celebration: A full day of community-led programming on Saturday, June 20, rooted in tradition. The centerpiece of the day is a vibrant Pow Wow, a powerful gathering that brings together dancers, drummers, and community in celebration of culture, identity and connection.

Vanier Community Corner

Hall Passes: We are looking for interesting and unique items that we can use for classroom hall passes.  For example, one class has a rubber duck, another has a small hub cap.  We use these passes to minimize student traffic during class time, and it lets teachers quickly identify which students have permission to be in the hallway and what class they are from at a distance.  If you have any items that fit this description, please send them to school and we will gladly put them to use.

Guitars: To support our growing Guitar class, we are looking for any gently used guitars that we could use as loaners for those students who want to bring a guitar home.  Most importantly, if you have guitar cases, this would also be a great help.

Track and Field

We are looking for parent volunteers for the track-meet on June 1. If you can volunteer, please contact Mme. Dunn at madunn@cbe.ab.ca
