Dear Vanier Families,

As those of you with students in grade 6 and or grade 9 are aware, PATs started this week.  They will continue next Monday with the Grade 6 students writing their ELA PAT before starting up again on June 8th.

It is also a busy time for field trips.  Grade 6 went to Telus Spark on Wednesday (see a message below about free admission for grade 7 students), and our Grade 7 Band went to Red Deer on Thursday.  A reminder that grade 9 outdoor education students leave on Monday for their 3-day backpacking trip.

A quick note that our cafeteria will be closed on Tuesday for hot food service.  Snacks and drinks (as well as emergency lunches) will still be available.

One of the things that makes me very proud to be the Principal of Vanier is getting feedback from the community on the positive behaviour of our students.  For example, the guides at Telus Spark commented to our teachers on just how well behaved our grade 6s were this week and how they set examples for the other schools that were also present. This week, local residents came to see me about some recent vandalism that was happening to cars on 32nd street.  They were wondering if any students had seen of knew of anything in the neighbourhood involving cars having their mirrors damaged.  If they do, please come see me as these neighbours would like to address the issue and have it stop.

Finally, June is National Indigenous History month.  Please see another message below around what this month recognizes and some celebrations happening around the city over the month of June.

Bon long weekend,
Mr. Chad Edmonds, Principal École Georges P Vanier School

June is National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour and celebrate the histories, languages, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. In alignment with the Education Plan, all people connected with the CBE are invited to deepen knowledge, understanding and relationships, to include Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing across schools and service units. To support planning and engagement, check out these events. Everyone is invited and welcome.

City of Calgary Aboriginal Awareness Week: From June 15-21, the City of Calgary offers many events to honour Aboriginal Awareness Week culminating on Sunday, June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day. Everyone is invited to join the activities.

The Gathering at Moh'kinsstis: A one-day community gathering grounded in culture, connection, and ceremony to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on Sunday, June 21 from 11 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. at  ContainR Art Park & The Alexandra Centre (922 & 925 9 Avenue SE in Inglewood).

Heritage Park Celebration: A full day of community-led programming on Saturday, June 20, rooted in tradition. The centerpiece of the day is a vibrant Pow Wow, a powerful gathering that brings together dancers, drummers, and community in celebration of culture, identity and connection.

Grade 7 Free Telus Spark Visit

During our recent field trip to Telus Spark, Mme Anna found out that Grade 7 students can get free admission to the Telus Spark for a year. We wanted to share this information with our school community.  For more information please visit: Teus Spark: Purple Galaxy Pass

Library Message from Ms. Peggy Goddard

Dear Parents,

As the school year is winding down, one of the important tasks for us is to collect all the outstanding books for our library.

All the books are valuable resources that belong to CBE to help students learn. In the case of lost or missing books, we will need to charge a fee for their replacement.

Our final due day this school year is May 29.

As part of the policy, we understand that the books are already in a used condition. Therefore, we will charge a depreciation fee based on its face value should your child not be able to return the book by the final due date.

We appreciate your understanding and help.

Sincerely,
GPV School

Outstanding Fees

Hello GPV Families,

If you have not paid fees this year, you should have received an Account Statement home Thursday of fees that you are owing. You can also see all the fees you owe to the CBE on your MyCBE account.

If you have paid fees since this Account Summary was printed, please disregard information on any fees you paid.

If you do not pay your fees, unfortunately we cannot offer option programs/activities/sports/field trips to students in the future or for the remainder of the year. These fees are in place so we can offer students several opportunities throughout the year. It is very important that these fees are paid.

There are several ways you can pay your fees. Online, Cash, Debit/Credit(at the school) or Cheque.

Our preferred method is of course Online Payments. This can be done through your MyCBE Parent Account. Please go to the Fees and Waivers Information for all the details about paying your fees using your MyCBE Account.

If you are unable to pay fees using your MyCBE account, please pay using one of the other methods. Debit/Credit can be done in person at the school. If you wish to send cash or a cheque made out to Georges P. Vanier School with your student to the Main Office, you can do that as well.

If you are unable to pay your fees, there are resources available to families. Please go to the website information regarding fee waivers.

If you have any questions regarding your fees or the Account Summary you received, please feel free to reply to this email or send a separate email to myself Beth Gilkes at eagilkes@cbe.ab.ca and I would be happy to help any way I can.

Gary Weimann Award

It’s hard to believe it’s that time again but I am pleased to confirm that applications for Education Matters Awards are now open!

With this, students at Georges P. Vanier School can now apply for the Gary Weimann Award for Community Service. Like last year, I have set the deadline as May 30!

As in the past, to apply, students can visit our application through the Education Matters website to register an account, and search for the "Gary Weimann Award for Community Service" application.

Vanier Community Corner

Hall Passes: We are looking for interesting and unique items that we can use for classroom hall passes.  For example, one class has a rubber duck, another has a small hub cap.  We use these passes to minimize student traffic during class time, and it lets teachers quickly identify which students have permission to be in the hallway and what class they are from at a distance.  If you have any items that fit this description, please send them to school and we will gladly put them to use.

Guitars: To support our growing Guitar class, we are looking for any gently used guitars that we could use as loaners for those students who want to bring a guitar home.  Most importantly, if you have guitar cases, this would also be a great help.

Track and Field

We are looking for parent volunteers for the track-meet on June 1st. If you can volunteer, please contact Mme. Dunn at madunn@cbe.ab.ca
