Dear Lynx families/Chères familles Lynx,

Hard to believe we are at the end of May! June will fly by in a flash. For our current grades 6, 7 and 8 families, if your student is not attending GPV next school year can you please contact our school office. You can also email at georgespvanier@cbe.ab.ca.  If you know a family who wants to attend Vanier please have them contact the main office for more information.  These changes are important to consider as we continue to plan for staffing and placing students in our classes for the next school year.

Last weekend some of our students attended the APEGGA Science Olympics at the University of Calgary. They were tasked with designing and building an amphibious robot that would run an obstacle course which they had been doing with Mr. Brown over the past few months. When it came to the actual event, both of our teams did themselves proud. The two teams achieved a bronze and silver medal. When I spoke with them about their achievement on Monday it was wonderful to see how proud they were of what they accomplished.

Late last night our grade 9 Eastern Canada students returned from their weeklong field trip. Speaking with some of the students who were here this morning, it was a fantastic time and visiting the Supreme Court was a real highlight. Thank you to Mme. Cosgrove for being the teacher in charge and putting in all the hard work to make it happen.

Bonne fin de semaine,

Chad Edmonds – Principal Georges P Vanier School

Pride Month

The Calgary Board of Education strives to ensure that all our schools are safe and caring places for all students and staff. As a public school system, we welcome and celebrate students from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and beliefs.

At Vanier, we have honoured and recognized our unique school community throughout the school year with events such as Orange Shirt day, Pink Shirt Day, Semaine de la Francophonie, Black History Month and Asian Heritage Month.

June is Pride Month Internationally, a time to recognize the pursuit of equality and rights for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. The CBE reaffirms its commitment to creating safe and caring learning and work environments for 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff. At Vanier, we will recognize this occasion throughout the month.

We acknowledge that each family and community have unique experiences with different recognitions and celebrations, and any commemorative activities in our schools may be perceived differently. However, classroom-based activities and lessons that promote diversity and inclusion are not subject to exemptions under the Education Act.

Outdoor Education Program

The Environment and Outdoor Education program at Vanier is looking for donations of used cross-country skiing equipment.  We will take any type of boots, bindings, skis, and poles – even old 3 pin binding systems.  We are trying to build up enough of an “arsenal” so that our classes can learn basic skills right in in the comfort of our own school fields during the winter.  For more information please contact Mr. Eitzen at mdeitzen@cbe.ab.ca.

Library Books Returned Please!

Please look at home for library books and textbooks. The locker clean-outs will also be happening here at school! All library books must be returned to GPV by June 10. On this day we will start to inform families of missing items. Textbooks must be returned to classroom teachers, or to the library.

Outstanding School Fees

As we approach the end of the school year, we request that families check their MyCBE Fees Account. The unpaid fees may include field trips, options course fees and lost library books.
