Dear Lynx families/Chères familles Lynx,

The arrival of May means we are now entering the final few months of the 2024-25 school year.  It (generally) means warmer weather, outdoor PE classes and grade 6 and 9 will be undertaking their provincial achievement tests.  Also, May is Asian History month in Canada.  There is more information on a few of these topics below.

Grade 8 students, Camp Chief Hector forms went home this week, and a mandatory parent meeting is scheduled for the evening of May the 12th.  If you have more questions, please follow up with your child’s homeroom teacher or Mr. Brown at dobrown@cbe.ab.ca

We have our annual track and field meet on June 3rd at Foothills athletic park.  This year we are expecting to field quite a large contingent of Lynx athletes and would ask for any parent who is willing to volunteer to contact Mme. Dunn at madunn@cbe.ab.ca

On an academic note, I want to recognize the engagement of students and teachers when it comes to mathematics.  We recently had 40 grade 9 (and a few grade 8s who challenged) write the Pascal math contest.  Of these, 5 received a level of distinction putting them in the top 25% of students across the country who took this exam.  During the next few weeks we have 78 students writing the Gauss exam which, at least during my tenure, is a new high!

Finally, starting next week, students will have the opportunity to identify their option course choices for next year.  We are asking teachers to give students the chance to complete this in class.  Please watch for an email from me in the coming days for more instructions for how to do this via PowerSchool from home as this will also give families a chance to review these choices and perhaps make them together.

Please take some time to unplugged and enjoy the weather over the weekend.

Bonne fin de semaine,

Mr. Chad Edmonds – Principal École Georges P. Vanier School

Georges P. Vanier School website has information as well.

Asian History Month

May is Asian Heritage Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, identities, and contributions of Asian peoples and communities in Canada. This month invites us to deepen our understanding of Asian Canadian experiences while affirming the beauty and strength of the diverse cultures, traditions, and legacies that encompass this vast and powerful identity.

Asia is not a singular story — it is a vast, complex continent encompassing over 40 countries and countless cultures, languages, faiths, and traditions. Asian identity includes peoples of East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Central Asian, West Asian, and Pacific Islander descent. These communities are not monolithic, and each holds distinct histories shaped by colonization, migration, resistance, and renewal. Asian Canadians have long contributed to the social, cultural, economic, and political fabric of Canada, often in the face of exclusion, erasure, and oppression. From early migrants and labourers to educators, artists, activists, and leaders, Asian Canadians continue to shape Canada in powerful ways.
